Grace is Not a Blue-Eyed Blond
Posted on Sunday, June 17, 2007
For years, I had a book on my shelves by the above title. I've long since loaned it out, never to have it returned. I dont even remember its author. I don't recall specifics concerning its contents. But I do remember its title- its never-to-be-forgotten, can't -get-it-out-of-your-mind title. And i remember that its overall message was that grace is one of Scripture's most important words. And it is.

As we saw this Sunday morning, grace is the very basis of our salvation. It is the favor God showers down upon us in spite of the fact that there is nothing in us to merit it- nothing. We also saw that grace is our teacher to call us to be better in all that we do. not as a work to merit the salvation that is ours; but, as a natural result of the gift of salvation we have received.

Later in the year you will see the film that recently blessed crowds in theaters throughout America. It is simply entitled Amazing Grace. It is the story of how one life changed by God's grace can, then change another life, and then another and another- until, ultimately, all of society is changed as a result of one solitary life. You see, John Newton, the slave-trader turned preacher spoke every Sunday to a packed house where attended a young teenager named William Wilberforce. Wilberforce went on to be elected to Britain's parliament where he became on of its most powerful forces in abolishing slave trade in Great Britain. You'll never sing the song again in exactly the same way, Once you've seen the entire story behind its writing. Amazing Grace!
